This seems like an easy task to do. The only issue is a cognitive understanding of what is trash and what is not. Getting these two mixed up could mean throwing away something valuable. On the contrary, putting trash in a place, it doesn’t belong also has consequences. Toys, clothes, and household items should have a place to go.

You definitely need a code word to teach your child to distinguish trash vs. valuable. I highly encourage you to use exact words instead of baby talk. This helps young children categorize things in their minds the first time without having to re-file information later. So, call it what it is, “trash.”

When they use a paper towel to dry their hand, it is now trash and goes in the trash can. When they blow their nose, it is trash and goes in the trash can. When you take off a band-aid, it is trash and goes in the trash can. You get the idea…

Just be careful to watch what they throw away and when they get near the trash can. You may also want to practice washing hands after as the things they touched to throw in the trash will have germs on them.
