Curtains really can dress up a window. Like anything else, they collect dust. Believe it or not, bugs- like flies, lay their eggs in the fabric. It is essential to wash them periodically. Some window treatments require dry cleaning. Most regular curtains can be washed and dried using the machines in your home. Have your child read the labels to determine the method needed for that particular material.

This is a great thing to do at the same time as washing the windows and blinds. You could assign all three tasks for one window each week until you finish them. Or you could have several children working on different tasks simultaneously.

Once you figure out how to best care for the curtain, help your child to know the mechanics of the curtain rods and exactly how to take down the curtains and replace them. . Have them place the curtains in the washing machine and follow the curtains through machine cycles. When the curtains are dry, they need to be removed from the dryer immediately and hung up. This will help them to stay wrinkle-free. Some cotton blends will require light ironing. You can use this opportunity to teach them how to iron If they don’t know how.

You may need to help them adjust the curtains or hand them the curtains once they have climbed the ladder. I still need people to give me the curtain rod because I can’t climb the ladder and balance the curtain ride with the curtains hung simultaneously.
