This task has some outstanding lessons connected with it. The apparent lesson is biology as your child learns the difference between different plant species. They can also have an opportunity to classify some bugs as well. They can learn about gardening and soil content. They will learn the character lesson of patience and gain some physical endurance. You may even use this as a spiritual lesson about weeds.
Depending on your weed issue, you may want to plan on performing this task right alongside your child over the next few days or weeks. Have a water bottle handy and take frequent breaks to assess their energy level.
Pick a day when rainfall is fresh, and the soil is saturated. Make sure their gardening gloves fit well. Have a bag, bucket, or basket handy, so there is a place to discard the weeds after they are pulled. After a short lesson on identifying the plants you want vs. the plants that are weeds, ask them to touch the base of the weeds. Teach them how to pull from the bottom of the plant near the ground. This method tends to get the root out as well. Take your time, and don’t be in a rush. This a great time to have some tender discussions about life. Ask them questions. Use this opportunity!
