You can do this easy job daily or on a set day every week.

DAILY: My husband was very particular about trash in the car. We put a full-size trash bin in the garage so that when we exited the car, in the trash went. This did three things:

  1. It made it easy to create a habit of looking around and picking up the car each time we arrived home.
  2. It promoted getting trash into the bin and not strewn on its way inside the house.
  3. It lightened the load on the kitchen trash as a bag full of take-out leftovers might overrun the kitchen trash, and we would have to take it right back outside to empty it.

WEEKLY: No matter how diligent you are with daily cleaning, most likely, you will end up with extra items in the car. Gather a few small trash bags and a tote bag. Help your preschool child toss the trash in the bag and items that need to be brought inside into the tote bag. They have a better eye and a great body size to find things under seats. You or an older sibling can clean or vacuum the interior while supervising them. Then train them to bring the bag in and dump it on the kitchen table. YES! You read that right. DUMP IT! This way, you don’t collect any bags of junk; anything missing is found and put in its place. If there are more people in the home, announce that the items “lost in the car” have been dumped and need to be redeemed from the kitchen table. Go ahead and give that motivational time limit to retrieve their stuff, or it is going in the trash.
